Diploma Programme

Diploma Programme

The DP organizes teaching and learning through six subject groups, underpinned by the DP core. Students can take these subjects at standard level (SL) or higher level (HL). Students must at least take 3 HL subjects and 3 SL subjects, or 4 HL subjects and 2 SL subjects plus the DP Core to be eligible for full DP certificate.

Schools can also offer additional subjects to meet the requirements of certain university/college majors. Students can also take subjects without the DP Core for DP course certificates.

Mission Statement from the IB

The International Baccalaureate aims to develop inquiring, knowledgeable and caring young people who help to create a better and more peaceful world through intercultural understanding and respect. To this end the organization works with schools, governments and international organizations to develop challenging programmes of international education and rigorous assessment. These programmes encourage students across the world to become active, compassionate and lifelong learners who understand that other people, with their differences, can also be right.
The International Baccalaureate® (IB) Diploma Programme (DP) is open to any student aged 16-19. There are DP students all over the world.

Origin of the DP

The DP was established to provide students with a balanced education, facilitate geographic and cultural mobility and to promote international understanding.
It was created by teachers at the International School of Geneva, with assistance from several other international schools.
Since then, innovative and committed teachers and examiners from around the world have played a significant role in the development of the programme.

What the DP offers students

Through the DP, schools are able to develop students who:

  • have excellent breadth and depth of knowledge
  • flourish physically, intellectually, emotionally and ethically
  • study at least two languages
  • excel in traditional academic subjects
  • explore the nature of knowledge
  • through the programme’s unique theory of knowledge course.

Developing students in the DP

The DP is an academically challenging and balanced programme of education.
It addresses the intellectual, social, emotional and physical well-being of students, and is respected by universities across the globe.
